It’s easy to accept that the Gaur—its glossy black hump rising above the undergrowth—is the largest bovine in India. And when the majestic Dalmatian Pelican spreads its broad white wings, few would argue that it’s the largest flying bird in the country.
But when it comes to India’s largest butterfly, our minds instinctively wander to delicacy, fragility, and softness. After all, isn’t that what butterflies represent?
Yet, nature often defies expectations—just as beauty and truth are relative, so too is size.
Meet the Southern Birdwing (Troides minos)—a dazzling butterfly endemic to the Western Ghats, found in the evergreen and mixed deciduous forests of South India. When it flies overhead, its size can astonish even the seasoned naturalist. With a wingspan reaching up to 180 mm, it surpasses even the smallest Indian bird, the Pale-billed Flowerpecker, in sheer spread and presence.
During the monsoon and post-monsoon months, this winged marvel becomes a frequent visitor to open fields, dry scrub jungles, and even home gardens. Its striking colors and regal flight transform it into one of the most beautiful and symbolic emissaries of the Indian monsoon.
For most of the year, the Southern Birdwing reigns in the upper canopy of forests. But during breeding season, it descends more frequently, offering rare opportunities for close observation. These are the magical moments when it:
Lays eggs on Indian birthwort (Aristolochia indica), the host plant for its caterpillars
Feeds on nectar from vibrant blooms like the Bush Flame (Ixora coccinea) and the Pagoda Plant (Clerodendrum paniculatum)
And it’s the female that truly steals the show—larger than the male, and indeed larger than any other butterfly in India.
Against the lush green backdrop of the Western Ghats, her glittering golden wings shimmer like sunlight. Even if you’re not an ardent butterfly enthusiast—or “aurelian”—the sight is enough to leave you mesmerized.
Here, in this butterfly, you’ll find a simple yet profound truth: size is relative, but beauty is absolute.
